The Union - The Union
January 28th 2009 was a saddened day - it was the day British band Thunder announced that they were breaking up. Thunder's blues based Hard Rock has always had a special place in my heart.

Main song writer Luke Morley has partnered up with Peter Shoulder to form The Union. Peter Shoulder isn't a blank page among Thunder fans since Shoulder earlier played with Thunder at their annual Christmas show. Despite Shoulder only being 23 years the young musician already experienced a lot. Peter Shoulder was in Winterville who recorded one album for EMI.

The Union's debut album is a laid back bluesy album very much dominated by Peter Shoulder vocals. Peter Shoulder has an expressive and powerful voice. However, Shoulder's tone is quite similar to singer of the grunge era and Shoulder doesn't have the warm glow like Thunder's Danny Bowes. Luke Morley has penned some great songs and while I wasn't expecting anything like Thunder I cannot help to wonder how these songs would have sounded sung by Danny Bowes.

The opening tune Watch the River Flow is Bluesy Hard Rock while the irresistible Easy Street sounds like a mixture of 50's soul and rock. The highlight is You Know my Name with a fantastic guitar solo.

The album is diverse and it seems like The Union doesn't want to be labeled as just another Blues Hard Rock act. No doubt that these guys are talented. The album contains several acoustic songs and The Union try all kinds of stuff on this record, which makes it diverse but also a bit uneven.
