Events and Reports - Dream Theater - An Evening With Dream Theater, K B Hallen, Copenhagen - January 20th, 2004
Written by Tommy

Outside the poster said "An Evening With Dream Theater" and that should prove to be no understatement at all, in fact this night was rather like a dream!
What I witnessed from about 8:00 till around 11:45 with the exception of a 15-minute intermission (yes that 3 ½ hours) really can't be described in words, but it would be foolish not to try.

There was a real tense mood in the air in front of the stage, Steen and I was consuming those ever-recurring Smirnoff Ice, while Tajs was sent to the photo pit. Then suddenly the lights faded and the crowd went completely nuts. As always when one of my top favourite bands are about to enter the stage I get this funny feeling of pure excitement and when the videos on the three big screens started thematically in album order to count down I knew the time was about the expire.

From the right of the stage the shadow of John Myung appeared and with his deep intro bass lines to As I Am we were on our way to a most magical evening. I personally really dig this new song very much and the crowd helped James with the great chorus in loud fashion and John's vivid and ultra fast guitar solo sparkled with pure energy. The track went right into This Dying Soul that featured a great duel between Jordan and Mr. Petrucci, just fantastic played progressive music with bite.

Under A Glass Moon was the first oldie and the response was earth shaking, this heavy song worked better live than I have ever imagined, the guitar solo was played with an amazing perfection and flair for keeping the energy rolling.
After these three songs the fans had been warmed up and the audience reaction was really intense, this seemed a nice spot for a solo passage and Jordan was up for it. A very unique, classical inspired, keyboard solo that mesmerized the eyes of the spectator on the fast rushing fingers running down the keyboard with a million miles an hour. The three gigantic big screens helped in focusing on what was going on on stage and also gave some great atmospheres with the different and fitting videos.

Jordan ended his solo with the first melodies from the fantastic Through My Words and I just had to sing along when James started to sing all your eyes have ever seen, all you ever heard, these lines are simply divine and James voice does so well in injecting these slower parts with just the right moving feeling. Fatal Tragedy rocked pretty hard while the genius Beyond This Life saw John Myung laying down some very technical bass lines and Mike going completely nuts behind the drums. Jordan and Petrucci spiced the song with an extra mid-section featuring some incredible duelling and some quite joyful parts.

As a welcomed breather Hollow Years was delivered in a completely moving version, the acoustic guitar work was so reassuring and James' soft voice filled the rather big hall with ease and an all-embracing magic.
Things got very groovy with War Inside My Head and thereafter aggressive and fast with the brilliant The Test That Stumped Them All, featuring stunning detailed drums by Mike.

Endless Sacrifice is clearly one of my favourites from Train Of Thought, a big part of this fact lies in the catchy and very powerful chorus that also appeared very bombastic live. A varied track performed with skills that could make everyone seriously jealous. Seeing John handling his bass with such awesome flair is an experience in itself.
Before the break the band lined up to play the amazing and spellbinding Trail Of Tears, and I was sucked into the mystic mood of this song from the first chord, clearly one of the absolute highlights of the evening.

Just before finishing a refreshing beer (we don't drink that much, really!) and a conversation about how great it would be if they threw in some Awake songs, the guys were already back on stage and I felt a stream of satisfaction running through my body as the first heavy chords of The Mirror blasted from John's guitar, how great is that song!
Needless to specify just how fantastic this song worked live, but also getting Caught In A Web was more than could be hoped for. These two songs marked a very raw and dark part of the set.
Mike Portnoy gave a very good drum solo afterwards, innovative and technical. Honor Thy Father worked really well live and all in all being a great song, the very heavy beginning simply rocked.
Another big surprise of the evening was the melodic and soft Another Day fitting in perfectly after such hard songs. The version contained fantastic keyboard work and James' vocals this night was simply impressing and unbeatable.

From the Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence song we were offered another two parts, this time the atmospheric and emotional Goodnight Kiss and the rocking and the very catchy Solitary Shell, featuring Steen and I jumping around like madmen. I just can't help it, the combination of melodic keyboards and the awesome acoustic guitar rhythm is simply divine.

In the powerful Stream Of Consciousness the big screens featured grand firework, which was very symbolic for this 11-minute instrumental monster. I was quite surprised that they played Finally Free but it worked marvellous, this very long song succeed in remaining extremely hypnotizing all the way through, Jordan once again showing what a genius he is.

The first encore was the 14-minute In The Name Of God, a great huge keyboard solo, brilliant synchronized parts with Petrucci and his monster riffing were clear highlights in long track, coming out very raw, hard hitting and rather vivid. Playing almost the entire new album took up a rather big piece of the set but with 3 ½ hours it didn't really matter, these songs were also extremely successful in a live setting.

As they left the stage from the second time I was totally drained of energy, still the voices in my head kept saying, damn I wish they would play my one of my absolute favourite Dream Theater tracks Metropolis Part 1 just to make things totally over the top and two seconds later they fucking did! Simply unbelievable and a version that was just perfect and immensely thrilling.

In accordance with my remembrance from last years show here in Copenhagen, they this time around played completely new songs, a rather astonishing achievement by itself. The sound was much better than last time too, in fact it was amazingly good, ultra tight and totally crystal-like.

The joy these guys showed through an incredible 3 ½ hours was very contagious and mind-blowing in every aspect, truly a wonder band! With Dream Theater you get a lot of improvisation and extra fooling around, keeping the show filled with that "what is going to happen next?" vibe.

A very personal and important element in my relationship with this band is the lyrical element, a great deal of my own life somehow lives and exists within these songs, and tonight they played some of my absolute favourites, over and over that is, with James roaming the stage with absolute brilliance both vocally and as a front man. The show changed fittingly from extensive musical extravagance to intense audience involvement. Each member delivered an incredible performance and I was left completely satisfied.

This one takes full points, simply the best concert I have ever experienced.

Yes that was indeed a great show!!! This was my fifth DT show, and along with the one in Bremen in 97 this was by far the best. A bit too many sing along tunes, but they compensated for that in so many ways.
Nice pic's by the way!

In short, a phenomenal concert experience. I totally agree with Tommy (though Star One in Hamburg is still the best concert I have experienced). I'm amazed that you remember all those details, man. I think you owed me a few too many smirnoff Ice that night, hehee.
My personal highlights include the surprising inclusion of Another Day, all the songs from Scenes..., jumping through Solitary shell and singing along with Tajs to the ultra heavy The mirror and Caught in a web. That said, every single moment of this concert was special and I thank Dream Theater for putting on such a fantastic 3½ hour show.
The afterparty at Tex was pretty damn cool too.

I'm a !HUGE! fan of Dream Theater, and judging by the great review and comments, it sounds like it was a great concert. Although I don't regret not being there too much, for I would have only recognized three of the songs they played, sense I've only heard two of their albums; "Awake" and "Falling into infinity". They're both great albums, and I'm always listening to them.
I'le probably see them next year, when I have all of their albums.

Sincerely: Glowis

I strongly disagree...
Labrie voice was shit.
He didn't hit any of the notes. It was simply too high for him...
The band played perfectly, but they just stood there... They didn't show any spirit. Sometimes I was bored. I was very disappointed. It was simply the most disappointing concert I've ever attended.

Comment by Joe Gast (Anonymous) - Friday, March 12, 2004
Rasmus youre clearly not a musician. If you knew how complicated their music mostly is, you wouldnt complain about them not moving around enough. It's not Linkin' Park you know.. Besides its not their style. It's progressive rock, not hvy metal...

Comment by Morten (Anonymous) - Sunday, March 14, 2004
@Joe

...I guess DT are labeled as progessive metal.

Crimson, Spocks Beared, Flower Kings are progressive rock.

Comment by Rasmus (Anonymous) - Monday, March 15, 2004
Being a guitarist for many years, I do know the difficulty of their work. I also know that petrucci is such a brilliant guitarist, that moving around on the stage wouldn't affect his playing at all.
If you, Joe Gast, attended the concert, you would have learned that Labrie was way out of league. He didn't hit any of the high notes. For me, being a musician, Labrie's singing ruined the concert.

Comment by Joe Gast (Anonymous) - Saturday, March 20, 2004
@Rasmus
I completly disagree. So what would you have him do?! While playing a 200bpm solo he should have jumped around to the rythm of some 16/19 beat..Is that it? Further more, JP used his amps quite frequently for feedback fills. And have you ever heard of an effectboard? A device to change sounds you know..a thing that might come in handy to be near when having to change sounds.

Dont know about Labries voice. From where i was standing it sounded great, but then again im not a singer and i didnt pay much attention to the melodi when standing in awe from watching JP.
Anyways, maybe they had soundproblems...KB hallen isnt exactly renouned for its soundqualities.

Comment by Morten (Anonymous) - Saturday, March 20, 2004
I agree with Joe, what should JP on stage rather than stand there play the guitar??? I don't know about you guys, but being a musician myself, I come to watch and listen to music being made by 4 (and one singer who has gotten better than he's been the previous two tours by the way.) very very talented players who surtenly has got thiere share of chops down.
This is not Twisted Sister, or Slipknot, this is DT, music comes first. (Also this was my, what fifth(?) DT concert, I've never seen any of them jump and run around, unless they switched instruments and did one of theire "nightmare cinema" stunts. The most active I've seen DT was in Bremen during the FII tour, where Sherinian and Portnoy were during alot of drumstick tossing, (Portnoy would during a track toss his drumstick to DS and DS would toss it back none of them would get sidetracked beatwise) which was kinda funny other than that it's about music not about scene antiks. If you want a show, go see Gwar or something.

This is not the best DT concert I've seen either, but it was'nt bad. Also they've been doing this for almost fifteen years now, and I don't know about you Rasmus, but you cannot stay in 6th gear at every concert during a tour, that's simply not possible.

In short: They delivered.

Enjoy!

Morten

Los vi en Puerto Rico este ano en su 20 aniversario. Exelente show de parte de cada miembro. Una velada definitivamente inolvidable, no solo para los fanaticos de Dream, sino para los que saben reconocer la calidad en la composicion de su musica. Without doubt one of the greatest bands today.

dream theater is amazing !! i am super fan

Comment by Little Drummer Boy (Anonymous) - Sunday, May 7, 2006
All I know was when I saw them in Seattle sometime back they were amazing. Being that it was also billed with Queensryche and Fates Warning (a musicians concert to say the least) I got my money's worth and more. DT was bang on. And through it all DT was so interactive with both bands during the shows including a 45 min oncore with Queensryche. The drum duel was somthing else. Gotta love MP kit since 2 drummers can play behind it. And the two bands going back and forth trading each others songs. Never saw anything like it before (Elton John and Billy Joel doesn't count). It was an experience. But I noticed that the concert you went to Pull Me Under was not on the set list. Shame!

Comment by Matt (Anonymous) - Saturday, February 24, 2007
Maybe if all their songs were as good as Octavarium, they would be CLOSE to "best band in the whole fucking planet," but as it stands most of their songs are drawn out as hell and have no structure.
