Animal - 900 lb Steam

The former guitar duo from W.A.S.P. Randy Piper and Chris Holmes are back on the music scene. Animal is their new band entitled and the band is playing old school 80's Heavy Metal.

Animal's debut album "900 lb Steam" is not a bad album. However, it's a total standard album brewing on old ideas, which have been heard many times on records. The music is 80's Heavy Metal, which I usually love. Animal is a bit too primitive and most of the riffs are worn out. Sometimes the musical pieces are cliche filled. For example the "ohh ohh" sing along choir rounding off Dog Food.

The album has 3 really good songs. The title track is a great song, which is a great old school heavy song with a great melody. The song has Chris Holmes and Randy Piper complementing each other on the great guitar solo. The song is followed by another highlight, the tough mid-tempo song Pissed Off.

A beautiful sounding acoustic guitar starts off the ballad Never. The guitar solo is bringing memories of W.A.S.P.'s classic ballad Sleeping in the Fire. The song ends up-tempo with a classic Heavy Metal rhythm guitar pattern.

The production of the album disparages the overall impression of the album. I wasn't expecting a Bob Rock production, but the production is very muddy and messy. The instruments are not clearly separated in the mix. The bass is the most visible instrument often drowning the otherwise raw lead guitars. Clearly this record suffers from a production that doesn't do the music justice.

I welcome the return of Randy Piper and Chris Holmes, but must admit that I am disappointed in this album. The lack of good material and a lousy production is making this album a bit uninteresting. When you have 2 great players like Randy and Chris you could hope for more guitar-duels like on the track 900 lb. Steam.

Darren.

This review was written before the album was out.

It was a promo copy and all information I had at time on Animal was a small press release, which said Chris was in the line-up and played on the album.

Later when the album was released and Animal started to do interviews, I learned that Chris Holmes didn't play on the album - so it's not lack of research. Rather misleading information from the Record company. I have to trust the information provided by the record company is true. tut tut
