Hughes Turner Project - Live in Tokyo
Fans of Glenn Hughes are flooded with releases. It's only been a month since the release of the compilation "Different Stages". While "Different Stages" only included previous released material this cd has a brand new Hughes Turner song called Against The Wall. The song follows the tradition of the Hughes Turner Project's (HTP) debut album. A good song.

This is a live recording of the successful HTP Japanese Tour from Tokyo. Call me old-fashioned but this is pure Rock history. Just check the track listing filled with classic rock tracks spiced with excellent tracks from last years Hughes Turner Project album.

Glenn Hughes and Joe Lynn Turner have both been in Deep Purple and Joe Lynn Turner has also been in Rainbow. Both are bands are legendary with common denominator Ritchie Blackmore. On this disc HTP are using an all Japanese backing band. Hughes and Turner change vocal duties, but of course Turner takes the microphone on the Rainbow songs and Glenn on his Deep Purple songs. Both are singing on the songs from their HTP album and providing some amazing vocal harmonies - just listen to the chorus of Devil's Road.

In chronological order the listener is treated with Glenn Hughes' Deep Purple era by including Stormbringer and Mistreated. I found the inclusion of Mistreated very odd, since it is the only song on "Burn" that is sung by David Coverdale alone. Guitarist Akira Kajiyama makes a pretty good Blackmore impression on this 9-minute track.

From Joe Lynn Turner's Rainbow era we are treated with a well-played version of I Surrender along with Death Alley Driver and the sweet pop ballad Street of Dreams from 1983 "Bent out of Shape". The classic track Spotlight Kid ends the HTP concert with Joe Lynn Turner in vocal top form.

Moreover HTP play a brilliant version of King of Dreams, which is the best track from Joe Lynn Turner's time in Deep Purple. The song has an unexplainable drive and in this version Glenn and Joe are singing duet in the chorus. Sounds excellent, since their vocals are great complementary to one another.

All these Rock classics are spiced with songs from last year's HTP album. The HTP songs have the same high standard and especially album opener Devil's Road is great with its combination of Rock guitar and Hammond Organ. You can't stop Rock n' Roll has a great energy and works out great live.

Glenn Hughes' song Can't Stop the Flood is also played. This was the song that I praised on "Different Stages" and the live version doesn't let me down. It still has that amazing groove and in your face attitude.

Glenn Hughes' nickname is "The voice of Rock" and I agree that his voice is excellent. However, Joe Lynn Turner outclasses him on this Live performance. Joe Lynn Turner has always been a great singer, but in this concert he is sounding better than ever.

Fans of True metal or any Heavy Metal/Hard Rock band, who started out late 80's or 90's should check out the masters themselves. These guys are the real thing.
