Events and Reports - Powderhog - Live at Open Air Varde - July 28th, 2007

Open Air Varde is a small and cosy festival located in a park area with an amphitheatre scene and luckily a dose of rocking music again this year.

Upcoming Hard Rockers Powderhog were given 40 minutes at the small stage on Saturday and kicked their set open with Opium, immediately placing the first brick in a tight foundation of dirty Rock N' Roll. An extended groovy mid section proved that the band has the ability to enhance their songs further when on stage.

A track like Another Trip featured detailed bass lines, harmonious solo spot and vivid drumming; it's a good composition but the execution made it just a bit more exciting.

Heavy rhythm guitar work sat Fool's Gold out on a slow but weighty ride, while the mellow mid-section in A Thousand Ways Out Of Here gave the song a cool vibrant feel in a live setting, the strong refrain pushing it relentlessly forth.
Check out the video.

For The Guilty shows that the band has a softer side as well, featuring some delicate dual guitar work, a song lacking that overly exciting moment for it to really flourish.

One of my favourite tracks Sweet Bullet held up extremely well live, each instrument feeding upon the heat of the other with the catchy chorus in focus. The crowd was generally a bit withdrawn but lightened up and really joined in on this one.

The setlist was made up by close to every song of their exciting self-titled debut album with the inclusion of Motörhead's Ace Of Spades as a crushing set closer.

The band gains points from a tight rhythm section and a cool easy going attitude.
Singer Johnny Houmark had a voice even rougher than on their debut, but it melted well together with the music and he kept the interaction with the crowd on a funny and balanced note.
A bit more spontaneity and "coming over the edge of the stage" would have provided a more dynamic show, but overall the guys did really well.

This is music made for beer, no bullshit Rock N' Roll performed with an energetic nerve.
