According to the band themselves they put "hard" back into Hard Rock. Ha ha - with a band name like that you need self irony. Actually the band name kept my interest at a low point until I heard the song
King of Cool, which frankly blew me away.
Not long after the band send me both their CDs and I immediately started playing their debut CD "Year of the Cock". It has been so long since I have put in a CD from an "unknown" band, listened to it non-stop and actually kept it in my player for around 3-4 weeks. The music of
Big Cock is in-your face no frills Rock, which reminds me of why I started to listen to this genre in the first place.
Big Cock has two prominent players that most readers might recognize. Guitarist Dave Henzerling is from
King Kobra (back then his name was David Michael-Philips) and vocalist Robert Mason, who sang on the self titled Lynch Mob record.
Speaking of
King Kobra -
Big Cock has re-recorded the
King Kobra tunes
Mean Street Machine and
Take it off.
Mean Street Machine sounds good with Mason's special tone and the guitar drive intact. However,
Take if Off is phenomenal with a moody classy vibe
Big Cock puts a ton of attitude into their songs. Who said it had to be that hard to write a rocking tune?
Big Cock fires off 13 splendid tunes with
King of Cool as album highlight. The chord progression is superb. Another winner is the mid-tempo title track with a tough ballsy groove.
Singer Robert Mason is the star of this CD with his big vocals. He has a special tone, which is perfectly suited for Dave Henzerling's gritty guitar. The thing that blew me away was the power of this band. The means are simple: in your face guitars and HUGE vocals supported by great song writing.
Big Cock continues the style on their self-titled album released in 2006. Again several riffs sounds like taken from AC/DC´s vaults but they delivered with a unique passion.
Mason sounds fantastic on this one as well and "
Big Cock" is another 14 3-chord busters
Big Cock style. The "
Big Cock" record is a bit more diverse with an alternative ballad:
Scottsdale Girls. David Henzerling is the main songwriter and his guitar playing is excellent with lots of feel. Henzerling's playing on
Dirty Girl is excellent
There are several highlights, but the irresistible
So Easy Being me and another ballad
Every inch of my love stands out.
The album opens with Mason stating that this album contains;
Big pipes and guitars strumming, loud bass and heavy drumming! He sure is right and I may add chunky grooves, big guitars and bad motherfucker vocals.... Robert Mason's words are the only ones that you need to remember from this review
Buy both albums and see for yourself. I can guarantee that this good time Rock 'N' Roll puts you in a great mood
