Events and Reports - Saxon - Live at Pumpehuset, December 5th 2005, Copenhagen
Written by Nina

Heavy Metal's grand old men had decided to visit Copenhagen on their 25Th anniversary NWOBHM tour. Tonight was focused on celebrating the classic, time-tested material from Saxon, which meant, that no songs made after 1984 was played.

The slogan of this tour is A Night Out With The Boys. This marks an attitude, that the night was all about rocking out hard in the cozy company of old friends, sharing a fun experience of old school Metal, a couple of beers and a mutual respect among fans and band.

Saxon is the type of band that always improves my mood a bit in a live situation. Though not a major fan, I really enjoy the energy this band evoke when playing live, and tonight was no exception to that. When the guys started out with Motorcycle Man, I was immediately caught up in a world of intensity!

The hall wasn't filled to the max, but taking into consideration that this was just a cold gray Monday, the attendance was more than satisfying. It is always a special experience to take a look at the crowd at these sort of gigs, where young schoolboys mix with old men in leather vests, all rocking in unity to the metallic tones.

The band proceeded with Strong Arm Of The Law and Power And The Glory, and the party starter This Town Rock, which they of course dedicated to our Copenhagen tonight. Biff Byford is a very charismatic stage figure, an expert in timing his funny comments and appears as an entertainer and a seriously passionate musician at the same time. An example was, when he ripped the setlist to pieces, stating that the band plays what they want, when they want!

The atmosphere was energized and enthusiastic. Everywhere I saw people smiling and singing along.

Among all the old hits, the band had been digging a few surprises up for us tonight, a.o. Suzie Hold On and Frozen Rainbow, a fact many fans seemed to enjoy, with excited, surprised smiles on their faces.
The more hit oriented material like Denim And Leather, Princess Of The Night and of course 747 (Strangers In The Night) created nostalgic joy among the cheering fans.

All in all, the old material of Saxon held up well. What I like about the songs is the uncomplicated Rock'n'Roll attitude, while still maintaining a high level of melody and catchy hook lines. Saxon's songs are straight ahead rock compositions outlined with a feeling of emotional honesty. The band seems sincere and as they live for this 100 percent, which came across in their energized performance.

Wheels Of Steel was used for a long sing-a-long session, which I personally think was just a tad too long. But these kind of things are always great at a concert, as they make the audience feel part of the show, and the atmosphere was great as the euphoric fans screamed along.

The great song Heavy Metal Thunder marked the end of a night of oldschool Metal atmosphere and a rock-solid show! I hope to get the chance to catch Saxon live again soon.
