Yngwie Malmsteen - Unleash the Fury
Well, where does one start with trying to assess this record? The guitar God again puts his fretboard shred frenzy to work on all these eighteen tracks of pure Malmsteen Mayhem, and it's all over the place, no, not just his solos, but the record itself. As the title connotates, there is lots of fury unleashed.

Within the tracks here, the record is stretched out with typical classic styled Rising Force tracks such as "Revolution," "Beauty and the Beast," and the emotional ballad titled "Cherokee Warrior" where his songwriting comes full circle with bringing less of the orchestral/symphonic aesthetic with him, pretty much setting the tone for the whole record. So the appetite for his music is sure to have been satisfied with all the material here. But besides the typical hard-edged stuff, Malmsteen, of course goes into different directions as his knack for creating new classical compositions with cuts such as "Magic and Mayhem," the layered classical piece titled "Fugetta," and the sub acoustic balladry within "Guardian Angel," so the album is filled with Yngwie's sound in both the axe attack and production aspects.

Brought along is his old Rising Force pals vocalist Doogie White, keyboardist Joakim Svalberg and drummer Patrick Johansson, while of course, Malmsteen himself provides all the guitars (and basses). Even with Unleash the Fury having so many cuts, it's not as if the content of the record is diluted or energetically spread out. The record as a whole is strong and it shows that a lot of effort production wise and writing wise was put into this album, and at times it has the organic sound of his early material, not to mention sonically there is a warm quality to it, so in hindsight it won't disappoint those of us who have been awaiting a new record, but in any fashion, it's typical Yngwie, love it or leave it.

What the HELL is up with that cover art?

"old Rising Force pals vocalist Doogie White, keyboardist Joakim Svalberg and drummer Patrick Johansson"???

Well, since this makes two albums in a row for them, I guess they're old timers in the Malmsteen Universe.

Mark Boals still holds the current record for Rising Force vocalists with 3 albums. Jeff Scott Soto-2, Boals-3, Joe Lynn Turner-1, Goran Edman-2, Mike Vescera-2.5(the Japan-only EP as the half), Mats Leven-1, White-2. This doesn't include live albums, best of's, or the cover album which had multiple vocalists. Jorn Lande wasn't even in the band long enough to make it to the studio. I guess Doogie'll start looking for a new gig after this tour?

And what's with the title being Unleash the Fury? While I appreciate Yngwie's willingness to poke fun at himself, I've heard the "fookin' fury" outburst clip many times and he says, more than once, "You've RELEASED...", not "unleashed". Unless he's planning to do a live album from this tour and call it "Release the Fury"?

Anyway, this gets a 5 out of 10 from me. Tremendously average overall with the poorer songs counterbalanced by the standard abundance of typical Yngwie shred. If he's not going to improve his songwriting abilities, or continue refusing to allow other band members to take a crack at it, I think I'd rather see him do another cover album, since at least then I'd know the songs would be good.

"If he's not going to improve his songwriting abilities, or continue refusing to allow other band members to take a crack at it..."

Or listen to music other than his own for that matter. I could never understand that. Anyway, I give it a 6.5.

Unleash The Fury definitely seems like a return to form for Yngwie. "Revolution" and "Winds Of War" are as good a tracks as any he's ever written.

I haven't even heard it... when he brings back Viscera, and Sparks on bass I'll be intereseted... I'm an "old school" yngwie fan but for the last few years he has been sitting on his (laurels?) hind parts. One dissappointment after another... based on these reviews it seems another. I saw the maestro last year at a 100 person venue... lay down dude, or let band members change your tune.
