Elvira Madigan - Angelis Deamonae
Let's face it, there are more bad Metal bands out there than good. The immense volume of generic and copycat groups alone leaves a lot to be desired. Thankfully with about every ten bands that are terrible, there is at least one decent one. It pains me to make the announcement that Elvira Madigan (if this new album is any indication) is not one of them.

Elvira Madigan is the brainchild of Swede Marcus H. Madigan, who I (regardless of the condition of this album) feel is a very talented man in his own right, albeit a misdirected one. He can obviously play his instruments and is very driven in what he is trying to do, but tragically his efforts fall horribly short with Angelis Deamonae.

The record, which is comprised entirely of covers, (from such appallingly butchered artists as Tori Amos and The Scorpions) lacks any sort of substance or listenability. Every track on the album (except for Chrono Cross, which is tolerable) is completely and unnecessarily unpleasant and offers absolutely nothing in the way of staying power, catchiness, musical progression, or innovation. It all sounds like one jumbled mess of screaming, guitar distortion, and horrible cheap keyboards.

To top it off, the production (poorly done by Henrik Jonsson at Polar Studios) makes it sound like it was recorded in an outhouse, with the annoying whiney keyboard noises and thin mistake-ridden rhythm guitars. I can actually feel my brain going numb as I force myself to listen to it. As painful as it is for me to trash any band's effort, I can't with any touch of honesty say that this is any better than dirt poor. And to be quite frank, this comes across as some sort of third rate Cradle of Filth rip-off band, destined for the used bin at your local record store. If you feel like you still want to give this a try, then I say go for it, just don't say I didn't warn you.
